The final quarter of the school year was exceptionally challenging this year. First, Oklahoma experienced a 10 day walkout from public school teachers, which closed schools and limited operations for the duration of the walkout. Upon return, OKCPS added an hour to the end of the school day. This resulted in a master schedule change and a new combination of ensembles. Finally, we reached our concert day of May 2, only to have a severe weather cancellation. The Virtual Celebration on May 7 was meant to ensure our children had the opportunity to perform but ended up being a shining example of teamwork, perseverance and the joy we all have when we can make music together. We are grateful to our partners at St. Luke’s United Methodist Church for creating this video of such a special time for us as a community
The Adventurous Voyage is a work for full symphony orchestra composed by 7th grade student, Dacey Tietz. The work premiered on Wednesday, December 6, 2017 with the composer conducting the premiere.
On Saturday, October 15, 2016, the children of El Sistema Oklahoma and the University of Oklahoma Pride of Oklahoma Marching Band joined forces to celebrate music-making during a halftime performance at the football game. Additionally, thanks to the generosity of many in our community, all El Sistema Oklahoma families received two tickets to the football game so that families could experience this special event with their children! Thank you to our partners at St. Luke’s United Methodist Church for capturing this special day. And, THANK YOU to our friends at the University of Oklahoma & the Pride of Oklahoma Marching Band for their hospitality and the opportunity to share our love of music-making with their fans!
The Orquesta Esperanza opened the Oklahoma Music Educators Association Fall Conference on October 15, 2015. This is the first performance of this orchestra and the concert featured the premiere of a new work by OCU composition student, Sean Erwin. This concert also featured the premiere of an aleatoric work written by six El Sistema Oklahoma students called Kansas. And, as if that wasn’t enough excitement, check out the video about 18:10 to see how the orchestra persevered through a technical glitch with the stage lights without even missing a beat!
